EVENT SUMMARY

Lakeridge Health’s Oshawa Hospital faces one of the highest greenhouse gas intensities among large Ontario hospitals, creating both an urgent challenge and a unique opportunity for transformational change. In response, Lakeridge Health launched Project LHEAD - the Lakeridge Health Electrification & Decarbonization Project-an ambitious, outcome‑based initiative designed to deliver guaranteed carbon reductions, operational resilience, and long‑term financial savings.

This presentation explores how an outcome‑based procurement and development model enabled Lakeridge Health and Ecosystem Energy Services to align stakeholders, unlock innovation, and drive measurable results. Through this approach, the project exceeded its mandated target of 3,530 tCO₂e/year, achieving a 43% greater reduction at 5,050 tCO₂e/year, while maintaining operational continuity and leveraging existing infrastructure to reduce capital costs.

Attendees will gain insight into the technical strategies behind LHEAD - including electrification, peak shaving, heat recovery, clean steam generation, and lighting renewal, as well as the financial framework that produced a 3.95‑year ROI, substantial utility savings, and over $1.6M in incentives. The session concludes with practical lessons learned on stakeholder alignment, market‑driven innovation, and optimizing flexibility in complex decarbonization projects.

Project LHEAD demonstrates how outcome‑based delivery can accelerate decarbonization in healthcare, turning ambitious climate goals into guaranteed, verifiable results.
