Artificial intelligence is impacting the hardware and software ecosystem, driving significant changes that put data centers at a risk of becoming inadequate to handle the new requirements. The rapid pace of innovation is increasing the difficulty in planning for future hardware needs without over investment or premature obsolescence. To achieve maximum performance while reducing energy consumption, data centers must be designed and operated by professionals whose knowledge evolves as quickly. Today’s data center environments have an infinite number of combinations, increasing the risk of overgeneralizing by designers and operators. Demand for IT services that are lower cost, more energy-efficient, provide more storage, and offer more computing capabilities is resulting in continued, significant changes in hardware and as a result its operating conditions. This is leading to the need for more mixed-use environments, combining general performance computing and high-performance computing. This ASHRAE course examines data center best practices by focusing on ASHRAE’s evolving thermal guidelines for data processing environments, including the latest guidance around liquid cooling. While there are opportunities to save energy in data centers, understanding of equipment trends, performance measurements, and effectiveness are critical to the principal objective: Data integrity and facility uptime.
Instructor

Dustin W. Demetriou, Ph.D., Member ASHRAE
Dr. Demetriou is a Senior Technical Staff Member and leads sustainability and data center innovation for IBM Infrastructure. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University. This role includes a broad range of responsibilities including product sustainability and lifecycle assessment, data center infrastructure management, workload carbon accounting, and future trends and regulations. His research interests include the analysis, application, and optimization of thermal management and energy conversion systems, particularly in the areas of high-density data centers, high-performance buildings, and advanced electronics cooling technologies. He has co-authored four books in the ASHRAE Datacom Series, authored or coauthored over thirty journal and peer-reviewed conference publications, and has been granted forty-three United States patents. He is a globally recognized expert in the field of thermal management and data center energy efficiency and has taught courses on these subject around the world. Dr. Demetriou is the current Vice Chair of the ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 (TC 9.9) IT Subcommittee and the past Chair of ASHRAE TC 9.9 on Mission Critical Facilities, Data Centers, Technology Spaces, and Electronic Equipment. He also serves on the Executive Committee for the IEEE Intersociety Conference on Thermal and Thermomechanical Phenomena in Electronic Systems (ITherm). His work has been awarded numerous honors, including the ASHRAE Willis H. Carrier Award, All-University Doctoral Prize at Syracuse University, IEEE TCPMT Best Paper Award, ASME Journal of Electronics Packaging Best Paper Award, ASME InterPACK Best Paper Award in Data Centers and Energy Efficient Electronic Systems, and the Best Paper in the International Journal of Building Simulations. He also holds a MS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Manhattan College.
Course Materials and Continuing Education Credits
This course will be presented through the GoToWebinar or Zoom platform. Course registrants will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions on how to log in to the course and how to obtain the course materials. The course presentation will be made available prior to the course date. Attendees will receive the 2 hour online course, a copy of presentation and 30 days access to recorded version.
Electronic copies of the course evaluation form and Certificates of Attendance referencing Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be made available to the course attendees.
