Feature Presentation:

Refrigerants - Present and Next Generation

Refrigerant transitions are nothing new to our industry.  Over the past 20 years, we have seen the phase out of CFCs and the continuing phase out of HCFCs.  The Montreal Protocol has accomplished much of what they have set out to do with the reduction of ozone depleting substances.  However, is there more?  The Kyoto Protocol highlighted the global warming potential of fluids and their connection to climate change.  Is this a problem?  We will look at the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols as well as the phase out of CFCs and what is to come with the continuing phase out of HCFCs.  We will also explore recent actions taken by countries from around the world to curb fluids that have significant global warming potential.  Finally, we will discuss what the HVAC industry and ASHRAE are doing to prepare for the next generation of refrigerants.
