Tiff. Bell Lightbox & Festival Tower:

It is estimated that the activities that Tiff. Bell Lightbox & Festival Tower at King and John will contribute more than $200 million annually to the local economy.  Designed by Toronto-based architectural firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB), in association with Kirkor Architects, with SNC Lavalin as engineering consultants, the project needed a red carpet aesthetic as an important cultural landmark.  Home of the Toronto International Film Festival, support for the project included the Toronto International Film Festival Group and the King and John Festival Corporation, as well as $22 million from the Reitman family.

The extensive use of glazing and translucent frit porcelain on the structures helps to integrate the two building elements, the horizontal Bell Lightbox on King and the vertical Festival Tower condominiums on John.  The architectural elements of Bell Lightbox contain projecting loop elements, inspired by film loops.  The extensive glazing and other architectural elements introduced HVAC design challenges which needed to be addressed by SNC.

Tour (Bell Lightbox only):

Attendees please meet at 4 p.m. at Tiff. Bell Lightbox, King St. Entrance (East of John St.) and must arrive with approved safety shoes and hard hat to participate in the tour.  Tour guides include design engineers from SNC Lavalin and is anticipated to also include representatives of the mechanical contractor, Modern Niagara.  The tour will include access to the steam room, mechanical rooms, architectural features, electrical room and generator room of the building.
